AMSTERDAM — Commuters would be caught like "rats in a cage" if a fire were to break out in the new underground metro stations to be built in Amsterdam, a senior fire officer has warned.

A day after an arson attack in an underground metro station in South Korea killed at least 120 people, Rotterdam fire chief Don Berghuijs raised serious safety concerns about the city-centre stations for the new north-south metro line.

Berghuijs warned that the narrow escalators, which would be the only way to escape a fire, were inadequate as were the systems designed to remove smoke and heat from the underground stations.
